Bandon Seniors started their league campaign at home to Riverstown on Sunday morning. The Bandon management team stressed prior to the game that they wanted to hit the ground running and take all three points from the season opener.
The first half saw a lot of pressure coming from the away side. Bandon dealt relatively well with this but midway through the half, Riverstown made the pressure tell and they took the lead.
Soon after the opening goal, R Holland held the ball up well at the left hand corner of the box, he turned on to his left and played a perfect ball into Cullen who’s volley was tipped over the bar by the Riverstown keeper.
Bandon started the second half very brightly and were unlucky not to equalise early on in the half.
Cullen did well in around the 6 yard box and won a penalty for the home side. R Holland struck it well but the shot was saved.
Bandon kept pressing. A superb ball in from a corner by S Holland to the back post was headed back across goal by Cullen and was eventually turned in by R Holland. 1-1 and the momentum was with Bandon now.
Bandon kept the pressure on the away side and eventually this paid off with around 20 minutes to go, a ball from the back was flicked on by Conor Nyhan and R Holland was there to slot the ball home to make it 2-1 to the home side.
Bandon were unlucky not to make it 3-1 with R Holland hitting the bar and B Cullen also going close. Riverstown also came close forcing a good save from O’Regan.
Riverstown worked hard for the last 10 minutes, trying to grab an equaliser but the back line of O’Donovan, Lordan, O’Donoghue and L Holland were superb, showing great heart to deal with everything that was thrown at them.
In the end, it finished 2-1 to Bandon. A successful start to the 2018/2019 season.
