The game saw both sides meeting for the second time in cup competition this season. The game starred with Bandon pressing to open the scoring and were unlucky not to do so early in the game with Holland brothers, Holden and Cullen all looking dangerous. The Ballincollig keeper was the busier of the two in the opening stages but it was the referee that made the first major impact on the game when Bandon keeper was harshly sent off as last men yet there seemed to 2 if not 3 defenders surrounding him. It was a yellow at most but Ballincollig failed to convert the free kick and Bandon immediately reacted and some excellent through balls saw Brendan Cullen through 1v1 and only two fine saves kept Bandon from opening the scoring. Holden was next to test the keeper before Cullen shot narrowly wide. Ballincollig failed to make the extra man count and were restricted to shots from distance from an excellent defensive display.
The game was 0-0 at half time and Bandon again came on strong in the second half with Ballincollig struggling to create any real opportunities to score. The opening goal came from a ball from captain Bradfield down the line which found Cullen who ran at the defence and they could only deal with him by taking him down. Richard Holland stood up and opened the scoring. 1 became 2 late in the game, but not before Bandon had come close with strikes from midfield and substitute Rob Moore hitting the post but it was the other sub Ed Andepu that finished clinically from a good save to give Bandon the second goal and end the game as a contest.
Bandon now play Premier side UCC in the second round as the college outfit beat Everton 4-2. Bandon had all of the defence in great form especially both full backs Mick Bradfield and Jerry Lynch which were at the top of their game. Brendan Cullen looked dangerous throughout with Richard Holland leading the line superbly on his own. Bandon return to cup action next week with a Quarter Final with Everton in the Munster Senior Cup with the winners awaiting the winners of Airtricity League First Division side Waterford United or College Corinthians.
