Bandon U17s began their 2012/2013 league campaign home to Mallow on Sunday morning. After a strong performance and win the week before, Bandon would settle for nothing less than all 3 points. Bandon started the strongest with their midfield 3 of Gavin Shiels, Mark Crowley and James McCarthy outplaying the opposition. Mallow began to settle down and opportunities began to follow but never troubled the Bandon goal. The Bandon players began to increase the pressure when a ball from left back Shane Barry was played over the top to striker Aiden O’Donoghue who calmly brought it down and slotted it away. Bandon 1-0 Mallow.
After this Bandon went close a number of times through Clifford Niles showing some great trickery on the left wing before cutting in and having an attempt at the Mallow goal and Mark Crowley with some strong strikes from outside the area but both were unlucky not to score. Half time Bandon 1-0 Mallow.
Bandon dictated the tempo early on in the second half and some lovely creativity by Shiels to set Aiden O’Donoghue through on goal with another good finish by the striker making it 2-1. At this point Mallow were finding chances few and far between when eventually they broke into the Bandon area and won a penalty. The Mallow player confidently placed it accurately into the right corner, the Bandon keeper guessed the right way but was unlucky not to get anything on it. Bandon again entered the Mallow box soon after and were awarded a penalty of their own after the Bandon winger was taken down. Gavin Shiels stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-1.
Bandon made 2 subs, Tony Ellis on for James McCarthy and Colm Minihane on for Clifford Niles. Bandon began to grow in confidence and thanks to some heroics from the Mallow goalkeeper the score remained at 3-1. Mallow rarely entered the Bandon half and when they did Jack O’Leary, Keith Ryan, Lee Holland and Shane Barry kept their nerve and defended brilliantly. Bandon were still committing players forward and again Shane Barry caused the Mallow defence trouble with a powerful strike which was deflected to the oncoming O’ Donoghue who got his hat trick.
Another strong performance by the squad who will hope to build on this win when they play Midleton away next Sunday.
