It was Friday the 13th and two of our club MOTW reporters were in attendance. At full time, both were beginning to worry that match of the week was under a goalless curse as for the second week in a row, match of the week finished a stalemate.
It was the perfect setting, sun was shining, pitch was in top condition and a nice crowd of supporters in attendance. Spirits were understandably high in the home camp as they had won 2 from 2 in their maiden season in the competitive realms of the Cork Schoolboys League.
In the opening exchanges, Bandon looked dominant creating some good chances but failing to stick one in the net. A couple of minutes in, Hegarty who has been on fire in front of goal demonstrated to supporters why this was as he rounded two Rockmount players before rifling the ball off the post. Moments later and a mistake from the Rockmount keeper saw the ball fall to Claesson but the keeper recovered to save Claesson’s strike.
As the midpoint of the opening half approached, Rockmount were showing small signs that they could score. They got in behind the Bandon defence but Foley came out well and the ball went out for a corner. Hegarty continued to cause the away defence problems and was once again unlucky with a powerful half volley from 15 yards out. Later in the half, Bandon continued to pile pressure on the away box. Beecher played a super ball over the top. Hegarty had three to beat, fought hard to get shot away but Rockmount defended well.
Overall, Bandon were the better side in the opening half but Rockmount looked to be dangerous on the counter. Whenever they did break, Bandon were well marshalled at the back by Coughlan and Murphy. Murphy in particular was very cool on the ball and dealt with things very well.
The early stages of the second half belonged to Rockmount however it was not long before Bandon took control of the tie again. In the 42nd minute, Bandon hit the crossbar, the ball rebounded and Bandon’s shot was cleared off the line. It fell to Burns who hit a great drive but it was just wide of the post. It seemed at this point, that Bandon were just lacking a bit of luck. Bandon desperately sought a winning goal, pouring players forward but Rockmount proved very hard to break down. As Bandon did pour forward, it allowed the away side to break but every time they did, Dan Murphy was on hand to deal with the danger. It must be noted that he also was helped by a very good defence in Whelton and Coughlan and a solid goalkeeping performance for Foley.
In the end, Bandon did not get that deserved winning goal however they can very proud of a super performance and a super start to the season in Division 1.
Player of the Week: Dan Murphy – A very solid performance from the Bandon defender. He was tough in the tackle and never stopped working hard for his side. His distribution was also very good. Very cool on the ball. Well done Dan.
